Bi-Monthly Edition

The Virginia Chapter of Trout Unlimited wishes all its members a very Happy Holiday Season!

A Special Note Regarding Meetings

Our next meeting will be on the 3rd Monday in January on the 21st, at Byram’s Lobster House on Broad Street. We will be having a discussion on Didymo, its effects on Virginia’s trout streams and what we can do to help slow its spread. Do not miss this opportunity! The meeting will start at 6pm. Anyone interested in fly tying, bring your supplies and tie. Our open discussion will start at 7pm. Anyone who needs directions, please call Andrew Stiles at 389-0812. Any club members who would like to present to the group or have any suggestions for meetings please do not hesitate to let us know and we will put you on our meeting schedule.

VA Capital Chapter Members of Trout Unlimited

Due to the increased time and cost to publish a newsletter, we will be going to an electronic newsletter. The newsletter also will be posted on the web site for meeting times and dates. If you do not have an e-mail address, please contact Andrew Stiles at 804-747-7767, and I will put you on a master list to be mailed a copy of the newsletter.

Over the last three years, I have tried to avoid this, and I have always felt the one stable link we all have with this chapter is the newsletter. Due to time constraints and lack of volunteers to help with the newsletter process, it is much more efficient to try this option. In order to receive the newsletter instead of looking it up on the web, you have two options. Either e-mail me with your e-mail address at andrew.stiles@verizon.net or call me  at 804-747-7767 with your mailing  address so that I can send you a copy in the mail. I have a roster of the entire membership and would like as many people as possible to respond.

Please forward this information to me so we can make this change as smooth as possible, Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

                                                                                  Andrew Stiles

Mossy Creek Fly Fishing

The recent rains have kept our streams flowing, and we have planned to stock all our private water next week. River Bend, Susie Q, Beaver Creek and Stoney Creek at Wintergreen are already full of willing trout, and we will be fishing well throughout the winter as long as water levels hold up. Expect fish between 4-9 pounds at River Bend or Susie Q inspecting your flies this winter season! We are offering our guided trips all winter long to these streams as well as our surrounding public waters. We recommend half day trips during the warmer part of the day until next spring. Looking for a great gift idea for an avid angler? Give a gift certificate for a private beginner class, casting class, half day or full day guided trip with us or you can purchase a certificate for a stream booking for one of our private streams! Call us at 540-434-2444 or 866-667-9275 for any questions and orders M-F 10-6 and Sat 10-5.

Rose River Farm – Fishing at the Farm

Western Style Fly Fishing in Virginia?

Dry fly and nymph fishing at its finest--our stretch of the Rose River is cold, crystal clear, and spring fed water that has a river rock base with very little sediment. The water is rich in the kind of natural trout food that produces trophy conditions.

Limited Pressure and Fly Fishing Only

As a strictly on the fly, catch and release stream, we create the ideal fishing conditions. We limit the number of rods per day to assure uncrowded water.

For 2008 there will be a number of Orvis endorsed fly fishing schools taught at the farm

Please e-mail us for the latest school schedule.

Unparalled Mountain Scenery

Fly Fishing for trout is great anywhere, but when you can do it in the majesty of the Syria Valley, you really have something special. Looking out at Old Rag Mountain, Double Top Mountain and the National Forest, you will fish for trout as President Hoover did 75 years ago. Make sure you bring your watch –it’s easy to lose track of time. Also do not forget about our other farm products like peach wine and natural Angus beef.  Check our website to see about wine tastings.

Reservations are booked through:

Rose River Fly Fishing, Culpepper, Virginia

Gary can be reached at 703-209-2832

For online booking: www.VirginiaTrout.com

The Rose River Farm has offered a special to VA Capital TU members. Four members can sign up to fish for the price of three during the month of January. Please call Rose River Farms to make your booking and make sure to tell them about your VA Capital TU Membership.

If you have any trouble booking, you can contact the farm at: info@roseriverfarm.com

Directions to the Farm as well as a Mandatory Parking Pass and Liability Waiver will be provided by the booking agent and must be signed prior to entering Rose River Farm. The Farm is patrolled and the parking pass must be displayed on your windshield or your vehicle will be towed at your expense. Poachers will be prosecuted to the full extent of Virginia Law. You must have a valid Virginia Fishing License. An online License link is available on the links page of our website. As a working farm, pets are not allowed.

Our Chapter Needs Your Help!

We are in desperate need of volunteers to fill the position of Editor of this newsletter. If you are interested in more information or would like to volunteer, please contact Andrew Stiles. If  we cannot find people to fill this position, we will only be able to publish this newsletter twice a year. One person cannot do it all!!

We also need your help with this year’s budget. We have had some great gifts given to us over the past year, and are asking for the rest of our members to please contribute. Please send you gift to the address below. TU gifts are tax deductible so please be generous.  We also need help with meetings, speakers, newsletters and articles. Please don’t be shy and contact Andrew Stiles.
